Many people that I run into on a daily basis ask me, "what are the signs of a bad structural foundation?" Let me start with something that you can picture a little easier. If you have ever been in an old house you can easily see the signs of a bad foundation. There will be cracks in the wall, creaking floor boards and the windows might be difficult to open. These are the Secondary Conditions or "symptoms" of a bad foundation in a house. The spine in your body is very similar to the foundation of your house. It is a VERY VERY important structure that provides support to the rest of the body and houses an extremely important portion of the nervous system. Specifically with regards to what we do at Ideal Chiropractic, we are looking for a Primary Issue called a NSS (NeuroStructural Shift). This is similar to the shift or displacement that a contractor might be looking for in a house that is showing signs of bad foundation. When a NSS is present in your body it will lead to a myriad of Secondary Conditions, for example:
Headaches
Neck or Back Pain
Numbness/Tingling in hands or feet
Chronic Musculoskeletal Injuries
Etc.
If you are experiencing these signs of a bad spinal foundation then it might be time for further investigation. With the house you could have a contractor come in and patch the cracks on the wall or put a few nails in the floor boards to eliminate the symptoms of a a bad foundation but more likely than not they will reappear down the road again. Your best alternative would be to take the time and actually correct the structural issues. Although the cost may be a little higher and require more time, it is the right way to correct the problem. This very same thing is true for your Spinal Foundation.
